Luxilon Savage String Review

Polyester strings are designed to offer the most control possible and are naturally harder than natural gut or multifilament strings. The idea is that they are durable, spin friendly and control oriented so they make a great companion for notorious string breakers.

With this in mind, it is unsurprising that Luxilon Savage ranks low on the power front, as it is specifically designed for control and spin!

As this is a low powered string, you may want to drop your tension by a few pounds to compensate and give you a little bit more pop.

It is always worth playing around with different tensions when trying out a new string to find the perfect match for you.

If you are a player that likes to generate your own power and does not need any additional pop from your string itself, this would be a great option to look at.

When it comes to control, this is where Luxilon Savage really excels. It is a very rough string due to its hexagonal shape, which of course adds to the spin potential but also means you can ‘catch’ the ball in the string bed with ease.

It almost feels like the strings are clinging onto the ball, rather than the ball sliding off them.

This makes the feel of Savage very predictable and consistent, which allows you to strike the ball with confidence, always trusting that the ball will end up inside the lines.

It is worth bearing in mind that this is a pretty stiff string, which has the benefit of creating a pretty neutral response.

Most of the speed that is generated when using Luxilon Savage will come from you rather than the string. This leaves the string with the job of controlling exactly where the ball should go, and in this respect it is pinpoint accurate and one of the best control oriented strings on the market today.

Touch is of course a very subjective part of testing a tennis string. The feel that one player prefers may be pretty jarring for another player and visa versa.

That being said, touch is generally deemed good if you can easily change from hard hitting to soft drop shots or stop volleys without the ball flying on you.  In this sense, Luxilon Savage is pretty adaptable to any situation.

Regardless of whether you need to rip the ball with a lot of spin, flatten out your shots or soften your hands and draw your opponent in, Savage has a very uniform feel to it.

Once you are dialled in, you can really feel well connected to the ball and place it wherever you want. This is one of the major benefits of this string and polyester strings in general, they have a very muted feel and you don’t need to worry about the ball flying off the string bed unexpectedly.

However, it is worth noting that Luxilon Savage comes in three different colours, black, lime and white and these actually have slightly different playing characteristics.

The black plays a little stiffer and the lime and white are slightly more lively. These are only very subtle differences however so you would need to play with the strings back to back to really notice them.

One thing to also note is that the string has a pretty crisp feel to it, despite being a stiff poly. You can feel the ball being cut by the strings when you play a slice and the same goes for the grabbing sensation you get when hitting topspin.

This adds a sense of security to this stringbed, allowing you to feel even more confident in your shots.

As we have mentioned, spin and control are the main stand out points about  the Savage string by Luxilon, and this is one of the most spin friendly strings money can buy!

The six sided profile of the string makes it extremely grippy, allowing you to generate insane RPMs!

The strings also move quite a bit in the string bed, which again enhances snap back and increases the spin that can be generated.

You may even need to adjust the amount of angle you play your shots with, given that Luxilon Savage is so spin friendly!

Another area that Luxilon Savage excels in is its durability. Naturally, its monofilament construction means it won’t fray or degrate quickly, making it an ideal fit for big hitters that break a lot of strings.

Even though the strings move around the string bed a lot, they do not notch or cause too much friction very easily, and this helps to extend the life of the string itself.

Many polyester strings tend to lose their tension and playability quite quickly, however this was not the case with Luxilon Savage.

It manages to retain its performance levels over many hours of play, probably due to the high quality materials used to construct it.

Generally, softer strings like natural gut or multifilaments will offer the best level of comfort, as they are the most supple and softest in terms of their construction.

These are generally what we would recommend for players suffering from arm issues. However, whilst these strings offer a lot of power, they tend to lack spin or control.

You would expect Luxilon Savage to be a very dead feeling, harsh string to play with due to the polyester material used to make it.

However, given this is a stiff polyester string, it is actually a little more forgiving than you may expect.

It is certainly not a string that you would call ‘arm friendly’, but it is a little more forgiving and comfortable than some of the stiffer polyester strings on the market today.

Don’t be afraid to string this one up at higher tensions if you are looking for the ultimate control and spin friendly string bed.

That being said, if you are struggling with arm issues but still require these characteristics, it may be worth lowering the tension by a few pounds and pairing Savage with a more pliant poly or multifilament string in the crosses to soften the feel further.

Overall, Luxilon Savage is a great all rounder for players looking for the most control and spin possible out of their game.

This string is Savage by name and Savage by nature as you can generate so much heavy topspin with it.

It delivers a consistent feel and is a great control focussed string that will let you do the work but guide your ball into the court time after time.

Luxilon Savage is a crisp feeling string that has great ball pocketing and is a lot less harsh on the arm than a traditional poly string.

You won’t get much in the way of easy power from this string, so if that is what you are after it would definitely be worth considering dropping your tension by a few pounds or combining it with a more powerful multifilament string.

If you are a big hitting player that tends to break a lot of strings, is after lots of spin and control to tame that raw punch, Luxilon Savage could be the perfect fit.
