Step 2: Turn Your Shoulders

The next step you can take towards improving your second serve and getting rid of pesky double faults is to improve your unit turn when you serve. The unit turn, which can be described as turning your shoulders, hips, legs, and torso all at once to prepare for your shot, is a fundamental part of tennis. 

All the best players in the world use their bodies as effectively as possible to get the maximum power and spin into their shots. 

With this in mind, turning your shoulders more so your back is almost facing your opponent when you hit your second serve will encourage you to get underneath the ball, improve your coiling and give you more space to hit up and out at the ball. All of these factors will actually increase your racket head speed, which will give you more spin on the ball, enhancing your control and margin for error.

Step 3: Hit Up and Out at the Ball

The next step to stop double faulting is to remember to hit up and out at the ball. This is a crucial step towards hitting more topspin on the ball, which is ultimately what we want to do. If you think about hitting topspin on your forehand, you need to bend your knees so your racket starts underneath the ball, drive up and brush the back of the ball so you produce as much topspin as possible. 

The principle is the same on the second serve! Turning your shoulders a lot will help you do this, but thinking about hitting out away from your body and upwards towards the sky will encourage that topspin brushing motion that will give you more margin for error. You’ll get more net clearance and stop double faulting in no time at all!

Step 4: Racket Head Speed

Finally, it is important to remember that racket head speed is your friend when you are hitting a second serve. The faster you swing the racket, the more speed you can generate, which leads to more spin, more control, and less double faults! 

This is not a natural thing to do for most tennis players, however. Often, we are taught to ‘just get it in’ when we think about the second serve. However, this leads us to pushing the ball and tightening up our arm, rather than freely swinging at the ball to generate more spin.
